Omega Sparks…
From September 1996 until May 2001, Theta Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and Albert Sydney Johnston Elementary School, Dallas, Texas , experienced a highly blissful and cultivating symbiotic relationship with the Saturday Scholar Program. In May 2002, Theta Alpha Chapter took the ideals and successes of its Saturday Scholars Program and transformed them into the Omega Sparks Youth Organization. The mission of the Omega Sparks is to work with and establish relationships of support and guidance to young men, ages 12 - 18, as they progress through the transformation to manhood, while instilling the values of high leadership and academic skills.
The objectives of the organization are:
- To work with young men toward personal development.
- To assist young men in setting and achieving high academic,moral and ethical goals to become a better citizen.
- To teach organizational and time management skills.
- To encourage and foster Christian principles.
- To help and encourage young men to adopt the principles of Manhood, develop leadership skills, and to serve as role models.
- To assist parents and teachers in the development of a total work ethic.
- To develop the desire to Persevere in adverse situations.
- To develop an awareness of Community needs and the desire to render community service.
- To develop well-rounded young men with values, perception and skills to thrive and succeed in today’s society and yet maintain strong ties to their families and communities.
The Omega Sparks consists of young men from all over the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and has an enrollment period opening in September and closing in December. The Sparks have participated in Achievement Week Celebrations, the YMCA Toy Drive, the N.A.A.C.P. - Garland Branch Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade, Black Heritage Stamp Unveilings, nursing home visitation, Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Desperadoes games, and various workshops/seminars regarding health, community interest/ citizenship, conducting meetings, finances, and spirituality.
